This morning, two young journalists were shot dead mercilessly on camera by an ex-coworker. As more information is becoming available, we have learned that the killer had been terminated from the news station where they all worked, and that subsequently he pursued an unsuccessful EEOC complaint against his employer. This tragic incident serves as a horrific reminder of the reality of workplace violence and the need to address it effectively. While no policy can insure against crimes such as today’s, employers should consider training their staff on available prevention techniques, including how to recognize and safely deescalate potentially violent situations.
